Stop Signs

Why do we have so many signs? They are informative, I understand. The world though has gotten sign crazy and now puts them everywhere without really stopping to think if they belong in certain contexts.

The stop sign is a big one. These things are everywhere now. The are at the end of every isle in parking lots. They are at numerous intersections in roadways. I have even seen them on trails to tell walkers and cyclists to yield to other directions.

That last bit brings me to my proposed solution. I’m not saying there aren’t plenty of times that a ‘stop’ is the appropriate action but there seem to be a lot if cases where the stop sign could be substituted for a yield sign or eliminated altogether.

The next time you are out and about and are confronted with a stop sign, try pausing an extra moment to give it some thought. I’ll bet you can find many cases in your own local area where a yield sign or no sign at all would suffice.

Don’t even get me started on a stop sign being needed but placed in the busier direction of traffic flow while the less travelled direction is allowed to move freely…
